Yes, and I think I can explain it in a way that even the red states can comprehend.
People who talk to non-existent people, and those who rely on non-existent people for guidance, scare intelligent people.
How does that work for you, Bill? I tried to keep all words to three-sylables-or-less to help out.

Kim, you've known this is how I feel about theism and you've known this since even before we began dating. We've been friends for the last two years since that ended. Such a sentiment coming from me shouldn't phase you in the slightest.
Do you not feel that I'm going to suffer eternally in hell if I don't accept Christ? Would you say as much? If so, isn't that the same? If not, is it any better if you feel it but just don't say it?
My problem is with theism, not theists, generally. When it comes to a guy who can wage wars, kill thousands, and do it all while invoking his particular brand of invisible friend club rules, then I do not feel too ashamed about ridiculing him.
In fact most of us don't consider Bush and Osama too far removed. They're both killing thousands because god told then this was a good idea. The ends justifies the means, etc, etc.
Call me bonkers, but murdering because god told you to falls squarely into the "lunatic" column in my book. I felt that way in 2001 and I feel that way now.
I choose to be friends with you despite what I consider your bad judgement in the realm of religion. As near as I can tell, you've decided to continue to be friends with me under much the same conditions, just in the other direction.
To put it another way, what would your response be if I went to your Open Diary and found an entry where you expressed thanks to god and I posted a reply that expressed displeasure with your entry?
What would your reaction be?
The displeasure is not with your entry but with your comment that people who believe in a being you don't think exists scares "smart people." In my hypothetical entry, do I say that people who don't believe in God scare intelligent people?
